The thesis is a report on the translation of an English academic paper "When Culture Means Gender:Issues of Cultural Defence in the English Courts",a paper in social sciences written by Anne Phillips,Professor of the London School of Economics and Political Science. The academic paper mainly demonstrates complicated relationship between gender and culture through cases in courts, and discusses different influence on cultural defence invocation exerted by different gender and culture. The two themes"gender" and "culture",have provoked extensive discussion in the international community and academic circle at present, which makes the translation of the academic paper a conducive way to spread different ideas on the issue.According to Peter Newmark, texts are divided into three types, that is,expressive text, informative text and vocative text. The academic paper aims to expound on the fact of cultural defence and express opinions, which falls into the category of the informative text.It boasts distinct characteristics as there exist a large number of terminologies in law and culture, abstract words, and lots of long sentences with complicated structures. The characteristics of the academic paper on both lexical and syntactic level give rise to difficulties in the translation practice, that is,how to guarantee accuracy and clarification of terminologies and other abstract words, and how to transform long sentences with complicated structures into concise and understandable ones. Therefore, certain strategies can be considered to produce a target text(TT)which fully conveys meanings of the source text(ST)and is more easily accepted by complying with expressive habits of target language.Newmark put forward semantic translation and communicative translation, and regarded that the latter is more applicable to informative and vocative texts in which readers' reaction is emphasized, while the former to expressive texts where the text content is stressed.Based on the analysis of text type, intention of the author and reader type, relevant strategies are proposed mainly on lexical and syntactic level from the perspective of communicative translation. As for the lexical level, some proper strategies are adopted, namely addition of footnotes, specification, conversion and omission. With respect to the syntactic level, such strategies as voice shift, amplification, order adjustment, combination and division are employed. In this way,the TT can be accurate, fluent, and reader-oriented,reaching the communicative goals based on adequate pre-translation preparation and post-translation proofreading. The translation practice aims to make people sense the collision between gender and culture through law cases, draw their extensive attention on cultural defence, and provide valuable reference for later translation of academic papers,so as to exchange academic ideas and translation experience.
