The thesis is primarily based on the author's whispered interpreting task at Peking University's International Forum on Ecological Economics and Ecological Civilization.International academic conferences are known for their dense information and high frequency of technical terms, hence the admittedly overwhelming pressure on the interpreters' cognitive load. When doing whispered interpreting, the author recorded her voice with a recorder. With the consent from the organizers, she then transcribed the source and the interpreted text of the recordings with computer software, and faithfully kept all the mistakes and languages fillers that she uttered for reflective purpose. In this thesis, which is built on the theoretical framework of Daniel Gile's Effort Model, the author analyzes several error-prone segments along with the coping techniques she used in whispered interpreting. The author then proposed her reflections over two years' training at the Graduate School:1)the interpreter, when physically present at the conference room, should takes into account the communication needs of the audience, instead of focusing her attention solely on interpreting;2)the interpreter shall have a solid mastery of the soft power, which is no less important than the hard power entailed in interpreting;3)the interpreter always needs to bear in mind a "big picture" before and during the interpreting task. The thesis revolves around an individual case of whispered interpreting. But the scenarios and coping tactics may serve as reference for other students or practicing interpreters, and hopefully it will shed some light on how practitioners deal with similar problems in their own practices.
