A Translation Report On The First Chapter Of The Sky Of Sinology Under Reception Theory

This translation report is based on a Chinese to English translation project,with its source text selected form a serial of Fu Peirong's speeches on Phoenix TV about Chinese traditional culture.This translation project provides reference for the translation work of the whole book and expects more English readers know about traditional Chinese culture.In The Sky of Sinology,Professor Fu introduces his understanding of the ideas of Confucius,Mencius and other ancient philosophers.It is a big challenge for the translator to translate the four-character idioms and sentences selected from The Analects.From the prospective of Reception Theory,this thesis takes culture transmission and English readers' reception as the main goal and analyzes it from the lexical and syntactical level.According to the content,the terms and sentences are divided into specific groups in order to find proper translation methods.In lexical level,the translator pays more attention to culture difference and uses amplification,free translation to translate Confucians terms in The Analects,four character words and archaic words.In syntactical level,the translator considers English readers' reading habit in the process of translation and adopts restructuring and free translation to deal with simple sentences and sentences selected from The Analects.Through the translation of the first chapter of The Sky of Sinology,the translator finds that the attention on readers' acceptation is benefit for culture transmission and the free translation strategy makes it easier for readers to understand.This translation practice activity helps translators get further understanding and researches on literature translation,and makes new explanations to it from the perspective of Reception Theory,providing wider thinking space for later literature translation.
