This report is based on the translation of Chapters 8&9 in Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures,a celebrated academic book written by Juliane House,a world well-known scholar and professor of pragmatics and translation,.It was published by Routledge in 2016.In this book, the core concepts in the translation theoretical system are clarified. As the book claims, the author "examines translation as a means of communication across different languages and cultures, provides a critical overview of different approaches to translation,of the link between culture and translation, and between views of context and text in translation".In addition, findings of cross-cultural communication, translation quality assessment model, corpus, cognitive linguistics studies are also combined in this book. This interdisciplinary and comprehensive academic masterpiece is of great significance in enriching translation theory and providing new perspectives for translation studies.Based on an in-depth analysis of the source text, the author concluded that this is a book with interdisciplinary and comprehensive characteristics, referring to linguistics, corpus application, functional pragmatics and even biology. The language is precise and concise, covering a large number of professional terms. Therefore, the translator must insure the accuracy of the content and use concise written language to convey the original meaning, while taking into account the target readers' understanding level in translation. In this regard,I selected Peter Newmark's theory of semantic translation and that of communicative translation to guide my translation practice.Semantic translation focuses on the semantic content of the original text, while the communicative translation centers on the reader's response. In order to achieve better translation results, the two theories were combined in the whole translation process. The report consists of six parts. The first part is an overall introduction to my translation task. The second describes the preparations made before translation. The third introduces the process of translation and the fourth mentions the after-translation work. The fifth part is the focus of this report, which discusses the difficulties and problems including the translation of technical terms, passive sentences and long complicated sentences based on Peter Newmark's theory of semantic and communicative translation. The last part summarizes the experience and insights gained in this translation task.
