A Report On The Translation Of Macau And The British,1637–1842 Prelude To Hong Kong

This paper is a translation report on Macau and the British.The book mainly discusses the history of the British acquisition of Hong Kong intricately related to that of the Portuguese enclave of Macao.The British colonized Hong Kong in 1841,following 20 years of European endeavors to tempt China to engage in foreign trade.As a residential base of European trade,Portuguese in Macao enabled the West to maintain continuous relations with China from 1557 onwards.Essentially,it is a book which contains fourteen chapters.While translating,the translator encountered quite a few difficulties,such as the translation of certain government posts,names of celebrities and special places,transliteration of Cantonese,lengthy and tough sentences.Nevertheless,assisted by the Functional Equivalence theory of Nida and some other translation strategies and techniques,including transliteration,amplification,domestication and conversion,the translator managed to finish the lexical and syntactic analysis in the report.The translator is responsible for the translation of chapter two,three,seven,nine and eleven,approximately fifty thousand English words.This report is based on the translation project of Macau and the British.It is divided into five chapters,including task description,process description,theoretical framework,case study and the conclusion.At the end of the report,the translator concludes the findings and understandings gained from this translation practice.All the source and target text is attached in the appendix.
