A Report On The Translation Of Technical Terms

With the fast development of film industry,people have a more convenient access to films.However,they always pay attention to the plots of films without much interest on the techniques used in filming.As a film lover,I hope I can provide people with a new vision of film in an artistic way through my translation of The Art of Watching Films(chapter 4&7).I choose the two most interesting chapters: Color and Visual Design.Lots of color and black and white film stills are showed in this book,so people are easily attracted by them.In addition,it is also of great fun that artists and other people involved in films are debating whether color is better in film or black and white.The author demonstrates various functions of color and visual design used in filming through a large number of famous films,artistically showing us the charming of film and also disclosing the mysterious veil of filming.This book is a kind of popular science book.Many examples are used in this book to explain techniques applied in filming so that readers can understand them quickly.It seems to be visualized,easy and understandable,but it is not the same when I begin my translation,especially for some technical terms.To solve this problem,I earnestly analyzed the property,type and character of the technical terms in the book.At last I explored and summarized some translation principles and methods about technical terms.Under the guidance of this principles and methods,I smoothly completed my translation.Through this translation practice,I deeply realize the difficulty in being a good translator.Translation is not just an easy transfer between different languages.Many factors should be taken into consideration.In order to improve the quality of the translation,we need to earnestly and patiently analyze the characters of the language,and then find out proper translation principles and methods.In the process of translation,I used three methods: literal translation,free translation and transliteration.Literal translation is used for term with accurate Chinese meaning,free translation for term whose meaning should be confirmed in accord with rules of Chinese word structure,and transliteration for term that can be translated directly according to its pronunciation.These three methods are just part the translation methods for technical terms.But they are used most frequently and understood easily,which can solve major translation problems arose from technical terms.So I hope my report about these methods can give people some help in their translation about technical terms in the future.Meanwhile,I also hope that I can improve my transition skills through this project,and deepen my understanding about the characters and translation strategies of technical terms.
