A Report On C-E Translation Of Ningbo Local Decrees From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

With the deepening of reform and opening up,China has enacted a great number of laws,regulations,decrees,etc.As an essential tool in regulating social behavior and maintaining social order,laws,regulations and decrees are incarnations of a country's economic development and cultural development.In China,laws and regulations help to improve the legislative institution,the socialist legal system and market economy system.Ningbo is an economic central city in the Southern flank of the Yangtze River Delta.The issuance of English version of local regulations and decrees of Ningbo will improve the investment-inviting climate and meanwhile making it more convenient for foreigners to live and work in Ningbo.That is why the Legislative Affairs Office of Ningbo Municipality has the local regulations and decrees translated into English.This report selected three Ningbo local decrees as the source texts for the translation project,aiming to carry out a study on the English translation of legal texts.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie,this report makes a research on the textual characteristics of legal texts and analyzes the application of Skopostheorie in legal texts translation by detailed examples both from lexical and syntactic levels.This report is composed of five parts.The first part is the task description which mainly introduces the background information and significance as well as the characteristics of the source texts.The second part describes the translation process which touches upon three aspects: preparation,translation process and proofreading.The third part is an introduction of the Skopostheorie and its three principles.The fourth part is the textual analysis,in which the author analyzed the application of Skopostheorie in legal texts by detailed examples from lexical and syntactic levels respectively.In the last part,the translator summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation practice,explains the limitations and offers suggestions for future studies.It is hoped that the translation report could benefit translators of the similar field in the future.
