With a history of thousands of years,Chinese character not only carries the responsibility of inheriting traditional Chinese culture, but also act as a effective tool for people-to-people communication and nation-to-nation exchanges around the world. However, due to some reasons, since 1950 s,when the Chinese mainland began to popularize simplified character nationally, people in Hongkong,Macao,Taiwan and other overseas Chinese community still use traditional character massively.Such differences in the font of Chinese character have posed tremendous obstacles for cultural communication and economic exchanges among peoples across the Straits.Since the Reform and Opening-up,with the growing of political, economic and cultural exchanges between the two sides and with the deepening of relations between the two peoples, the conversion between simplified character and traditional character has come into focus, not only in political, economical and cultural area, but also in people's daily life. For one thing, the study of the conversion between simplified character and traditional character can help to break the obstacles blocking the people-to-people communications across the Straits, which is beneficial to political unity, economic cooperation and cultural fusion between Chinese mainland and the four areas. For another,it can not only raise people awareness about the two fonts of Chinese character as well as the culture and history behind them but also increase people's interests in the study of Chinese ancient civilization and further popularize traditional Chinese culture. Therefore,it is urgent, both theoretically and practically,to conduct a study of the conversion between the two fonts. This paper will focus on the following aspects: first is to conduct a systemic study on the form, principle and features of the conversion, collect problems occurring in the conversion process and give suggestions on the optimization of conversion methods.Second is to discuss the importance of the standardization of Chinese character on the basis of the foregoing study. To be specific,First part is an introduction. The author reviews the mass articles, made by scholars both from home and abroad, relating to the present progress, results and problems in the study of the conversion between simplified character and traditional character so as to set the tone for its discussion in the later paragraphs.Second part is an overview of the two fonts. In this part, the author mainly discusses the definitions, functions and roles of the two fonts as well as their applications in the collection of ancient books, which laid groundwork for the discussion of the conversion in the following part.Third part is about the conversion between simplified character and traditional character. As the key of the paper, this part mainly includes interpretation on the significance of the conversion, introduction of conversion tools and problems in the conversion processes.Employing the method of quantitative analysis and based on comparative study and interdisciplinary research, the author classifies and summarizes the reliable corpora, and conducts deeper discussions on the conversion.Forth part is the optimization of the conversion system. This part, based on the problems emerged in the testing procedure, mainly discusses how to optimize the conversion system from the respect of optimizing strategy, testing method and necessary annotation.Fifth part is about the relations between the conversion and standardization of Chinese character. This part begins with the evolving of the standardization of Chinese character, presents the phenomena and reasons of traditional character abuse, and discusses how to standardize traditional character, which sets a sharp warning on its abusers.
