Translation Report On Health Preservation In The Haze Era (Excerpts):on Handling Transfer Redundancy In C-E Translation Of Popular Scientific Text

The original text of this translation report is an excerpt of the popular scientific book on life nurturing Health Preservation in the Haze Era.Due to differences in language styles and health cultures of China and Western countries,one of the obvious problems emerge in the translation of the original text is transfer redundancy,i.e.,a linguistic phenomenon in which redundant expressions are caused by the transferring of source language's combination patterns to the target language,and due to which the communicative effect is weakened.This report focuses on the difficulty of transfer redundancy,and applies different methods derived from communicative translation strategy to deal with distinctive redundancies.Communicative translation strategy requires the information delivered in accordance with the linguistic,cultural and pragmatic forms of the target language.Also,the content or the form of the original text can be adjusted accordingly if necessary.In view of this,this report explores transfer redundancy appeared in the translation process of the original text from the lexical level and the syntactic level;attempts to handle this linguistic phenomenon by means of communicative translation strategy,from the perspective of text-functions and text-categories;and proposes four translation methods,i.e.,omission,reduction,selective translation and condensation to dispose redundant nouns and verbs,redundant twins,repetition and redundant modifiers respectively.It indicates in this report that transfer redundancy in C-E translation of popular scientific text can be effectively handled by making correct judgments of the attribute and the level of different redundancies,with communicative translation as the strategy.It is only by doing this can the balance of redundancy in the translation be achieved,and can inter-lingual communication be accomplished.
