Disfluency In English To Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Fluency is an important criterion for interpreting quality and an indicator of the professionalism of trainee interpreters.The opposite of fluency is disfluency,which is a common phenomenon in interpreting.In interpreting,interpreters keep working to the maximum of their efforts and are vulnerable to cognitive saturation.Thus,disfluency is almost inevitable.Disfluency can not only be caused by a lack of linguistic knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge but also overloaded processing capacity and inappropriate allocation of efforts.Disfluency can also reflect specific problems in trainee interpreter’s listening comprehension,note-taking,remembering and speech production.The report aims at studying disfluency in a simulated consecutive interpreting,finding out the solutions for disfluency and helping improve the performance of interpreters.The report is based on the interpreting at the Mock Conference of Barack Obama’s Speech at the 26^thConference of Parties of the United Nations Climate Change Conference（COP26）.Under the guidance of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model,the report digs into the causes of disfluency through case study.The report finds that disfluency in the mock conference includes correction,repetition,stuttering,lengthening of vowel and consonant,false start,restructuring,filled pause and silent pause.The disfluency can be attributed to the following causes:lack of background knowldge,inappropriate note-taking and coordination,syntactical complexity and high information density,improper organization of target language,and interference from note-reading and remembering.Targeting on these causes,the report puts forward the coping strategies including enhancing preparation for background knowledge,expanding language availability,allocating appropriate efforts in listening analysis,improving note-taking and note-reading and expedients of applying omission and generalization and applying direct translation and foreignization.Through the interpreting practice report,the interpreter has gained a deeper understanding of the disfluency and the deficiency of his interpretation.It is hoped that the report can provide reference for the preparation of English-Chinese interpreting and shed a little enlightenment on interpreting researchers and learners.
