This is a project on the translation of The Color of Hope,a novel written by Susan Madison,an English female writer.The translator selects Chapter Five to Chapter Eight.In popular and easy-to-understand language,this novel affectionately provokes thoughts on domestic affection,friendship and life.It narrates a story about the Connellys and their two children.Their life is gradually back on track after the daughter's drowning,but they are informed of the grievous news that their son suffers leukaemia.The family faces the serious disease,its therapy,remission and unlucky recurring.Going through a series of blows,the heroine revives from hopelessness.It points to the theme of this novel:the color of hope,which motivates readers to hunt for hope in their need.This translation focuses on spoken dialogues,so the translator is supposed to deal with these difficulties flexibly to be in line with the daily communication habits and avoid mixing spoken language with written language.Meanwhile,the translator needs to decide the ways of speaking and mould the full image of characters on the grounds of their age,temperament,relationship and education.In regard to translation of landscape description,the translator should be armed with good English language skills and excellent Chinese expression ability.Based on Skopotheory's three rules:skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,the translator uses some specific translation methods,including amplification,omission,conversion and change of clause order,so as to make the target text consistent with the original text in content,form and style,and increase its readability and acceptability as well.Through the practice,the translator has been fully attracted by the charm of translation,which is like polishing a delicate jade.The translator must try to figure out the relationship between source language and target language and let imagination run wild to carve out a satisfactory work.Translation is a trial and error process,so the translator needs to enhance his proficiency with both languages and steadfastly take every step in the process of translation.
