In the teaching practice of basic English at secondary vocational school,the students'reading abilities are not satisfying.It doesn't mean that students can't understand the language itself,but they are in the shortage of the ability of deep-level reading.The author tries to apply critical reading to English teaching to cultivate those English reading abilities and improve the current situation of English teaching at secondary vocational schools.Based on schema theory,constructivism learning theory and critical discourse analysis theory,this research used teaching experiment method to answer the following two questions.(1)What is the effect of critical reading teaching in the English class of secondary vocational school?(2)What are the problems of applying critical reading in English class?The experiment lasted one term.The author selected two classes in Grade 3 as subjects.Critical reading was applied in the experimental class while the control class was taught according to the traditional teaching method.The author adopted test and interview methods to collect data,and adopted SPSS18.0 to analyze the collected data and discuss.The experimental results show that after four months'critical reading teaching,the performance of students at the experimental class was improved much more rapidly than that at control class,and students' enthusiasm for English learning and reading ability were improved too.They also have learnt how to use critical reading strategies.So,the author concludes that it's significant to instruct secondary vocational students how to read critically.It can not only cultivates the students' critical thinking ability,but also improves the students' interest in English reading class,activate the class,enhance students' awareness of cooperation and discussion and finally improve the students' comprehensive reading performance and lay a sordid foundation for their work in the future.
