Put forward by Hans Vermeer,a representative of German functionalist school,Skopos theory is different from the previous translation theory of equivalence, which is source text-oriented.It emphasizes the importance of social culture and communicative function of the target text, advocates that the translator should coordinate the relationship among the translator, the intention of source text and the target reader, and the translation procedure and strategies should be determined by the purpose of translation under the guidance of three rules, which derive from it and also function as the measurement of translation activity.Various translation strategies are encouraged to adopt by the translator in this theory.Skopos theory expands and enriches translation theory, and serves as guidance to the translation of literary study works.Material of this report is selected from an academic book,John Osborne's Larkin,Ideology and Critical Violence. The book depicts the life of the poet Philip Larkin,a leading figure of the Movement, the misinterpretations of his works in literary world, and the implied meaning of his poems. This is an academic book with literal nature, and there is no Chinese version,so the translator decides to conduct an analysis on the translation of 10,000 words selected from over 40,000 words in her translation practice. In this practice,Skopos theory is taken as the theoretical framework, and three rules of Skopos theory-Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, are adopted as the principles to guide this translation practice.Difficulties met in the translation, such as coined words, allusions and terminologies,cause-and effect sentences, long and complex sentences with several modifiers,context-dominated sentences are solved by employing addition, free translation, annotation, reversing, recasting and interpretative translation, furthermore, detailed case study are conducted on extracted examples. The translator concludes that Skopos theory plays a positive role in guiding the translation of literary criticism works.
