Self-monitoring is to interpretation what quality control is to product manufacturing. It is crucial to producing a clear and error-free target speech.Without proper self-monitoring,the target speech will be riddled with linguistic mistakes, making the interpretation less than effective. This thesis is a case study of the author's performance during the “China's Rise” mock conference as an English-to-Chinese interpreter. The author identifies four types of linguistic mistakes that are caused by lacking self-monitoring,namely slip of tongue, collocation error, mixed sentence structure and bad rhythm. After exploring the circumstances where these mistakes occur, the author proposes a few possible solutions: boosting pre-articulatory and post-articulatory monitoring, slightly pausing between sentences, making self-monitoring a habit, comprehensively improving interpreting skills and optimizing processing capacity management.By looking at the author's own mistakes, this thesis hopes to achieve a better understanding of the practice of self-monitoring in consecutive interpretation and how it can be employed to reduce linguistic errors in target speech.
