Translation Of Nonverbal Information In Subtitle Translation Of Youtube Videos

The development of the Internet gives Chinese audience an opportunity to watch movies and TV shows from abroad.However,most of the Chinese audience are not able to understand those movies and TV shows without subtitles.As a result,subtitle translation and fansub groups develop rapidly in recent years.During subtitle translation,the author discovered that the translation of nonverbal information tends to be neglected and that it is not easy to translate this information because of the constraints on subtitling.Therefore,based on the subtitle translation project of Youdao Fansub Group,this thesis attempts to find out some practical strategies for the translation of nonverbal information in subtitle translation of YouTube videos.In the thesis,nonverbal information is divided into three categories,namely body language,paralanguage and environmental language.To translate body language,the strategies are description and supplement;to translate paralanguage,the strategies are description,supplement and simplification and omission;and to translate environmental language,the strategies are adding subtitles to the background and adding annotation.Through the analysis of the case study,it is noticed that appropriate translation of nonverbal information can improve the quality of subtitles and bring a better viewing experience to the audience.
