Word order refers to the order of sentence constituents, which is not only an important grammatical form and a kind of rhetorical means, but also a mapping of cognitive mechanism. In English-Chinese translation, the differences of language structure,as well as different cognitive patterns and ways of thinking for English and Chinese people, result in a great distinction of word order between English and Chinese expressions, which leads to one of the difficulties in translation.Technical text is to transfer information correctly while the functional equivalence theory emphasizes the target readers' need during translation,so functional equivalence theory can play a positive role in improving EST translation. In terms of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, this thesis discussed English-Chinese translation in the aspect of word order. It compared the differences of the main components and modifiers of sentences in the two languages, made adjustment of word order in translation and focused on functional equivalence and the target readers' needs. The translation material is from parts of a book,Fundamentals and New Concepts for Shipbuilding Engineering. It intends to find an appropriate strategy on word order adjustment for a more accurate and fluent translation.
