On the basis of communicative translation theory and functional equivalence theory,the report mainly discusses the translation of the fourth chapter of Language Society and Power,an English sociolinguistics textbook.Each chapter in the book leads readers directly into theoretical ideas and analytic strategies applicable to its research projects.The chosen chapter is mainly bout language used in the media and how the changes in technology have altered the way news is produced and consumed.The source text is from a popular linguistics textbook,the language of which is accurate and brief.It introduces the function and effect of language from different perspectives by case analysis.Therefore,with the guidance of the two theories mentioned above,the translation aims at conveying accurate and easily comprehensible linguistic knowledge to readers.For the translation of this sort of text,one important standard is that the target text should be reader-centered.On account of the readers' cultural background,psychology of information receiving and acceptances,the translation should help the readers to understand the linguistic theory with their mother tongue.Apart from the above translation theories,to make the target text more readable and understandable,in the process of translation,the author needs to adjust the word order to a great extent.Reviewing related literature,the author has summarized how to adjust the word order and classified the methods into: word order adjustment,time sequence adjustment,logical sequence adjustment,the position of modifiers adjustment and focus information adjustment.The report consists of four parts,which are introduction to the project,analysis of the source text,difficulties in translation and solutions,and conclusion.
