The material of the translation project is selected from Report on Development of China's Media Industry(2016),a book which covers the information of such industries as TV,film and broadcasting. Here, the author translated a part of the book and summarized difficulties in translating four-character Chinese metaphors.By focusing on specific difficulties in the translation project, this report provides corresponding solutions based on a detailed analysis of corresponding examples.During translation, the author finds that there are many metaphors, especially four-character Chinese metaphors in the book, which bring great difficulties to the author as a translator. In this project, the difficulties are mainly reflected in two aspects:1)Difficulty in dealing with Chinese metaphorical images;2)Difficulty in transferring the connotative meaning of Chinese metaphors. This report, guided by Nida's functional equivalence theory, discusses the difficulties in translating four-character Chinese metaphors.Based on the theory, the following solutions have been adopted to overcome the difficulties in translation:(1)Maintaining metaphorical images by means of equivalent literal translation and similar metaphorical image substitution;(2)Literal translation with annotation and maintaining the connotative meaning and omitting the metaphorical image. These solutions are proved effective to overcome the difficulties in translating four-character Chinese metaphors into English. In the mean time,it is hoped that the solutions can provide some effective reference for other translators to solve similar translation problems. |
