In this report, the author selects Chapter 1 to Chapter 3 of Ask the Flower as the translation material. The novel involves much knowledge in the field of religion and Japanese traditional culture, which increases the difficulty of translation.Furthermore, the novel depicts two different space-times,Middle Age and Modern society. Therefore, how to reproduce the complicated character relationship in two different space-times also becomes the difficulty in the process of translating. This report is an analysis of the translation practice on the theoretical basis of communicative translation theory.Under the guidance of this theory, this thesis analyzes how to select different translation methods to achieve optimal translation effect from the aspects of proper nouns, idioms and different ways of expression. In the process of translating and analyzing, the author understands the guiding role of communicative translation theory in the translation of Ask the Flower, and fully recognizes the importance of understanding the original text and focusing on the optimal translation effects brought to readers. This report consists of the following three parts:The first chapter is an analysis of the original text. The first section introduces Jakucho Setouchi's life experience and the main content of this novel Ask the Flower. The second section analyzes the difficulties encountered in translation.First, there are a large number of proper nouns and idioms in the novel, which greatly increases the difficulty in understanding the content of the original text.Secondly, there are great differences in language expression between Chinese and Japanese despite that both China and Japan belong to the East-Asian culture. Therefore,it is also one of the difficulties to make the translated version better conform to Chinese expression. The second chapter is an introduction to communicative translation theory and its applicability to the Chinese translation of Ask the Flower. The first section introduces the definition and features of Newmark's communicative translation theory.Communicative translation is the core content of Newmark's translation theory.According to the different functions of text,Newmark divides translation text into three types, namely "expressive text","informative text" and "vocative text".The novel Ask the flower strikes a sympathetic chord in the heart of its readers through the portraits of character emotions and advocates that people should follow their heart and pursue unlimited freedom. Therefore, the novel should be categorized as "vocative text" based on Newmark's definition and classification of various text types and communicative translation is more suitable for the translation of this text.Under the guidance of this theory, the author illustrates the guiding role in translation with an exemplification of the translating of Ask the Flower. The third chapter is an analysis of the application of communicative translation theory in translation from two aspects. The first section focuses on the case analysis of proper nouns and idioms translation. There are many proper nouns related to religions and Japanese traditional folktales in Ask the Flower.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, the author adopts the method of literal translation and annotation, which not only preserves the cultural characteristics of the original text, but also allows readers to grasp a deeper understanding of the meaning of these nouns as well.As for the translation of idioms, the author tries to use the words that conform to Chinese language environment. The second section focuses on differences in ways of expression.Conversion, addition and compilation are adopted to make the translation comply with Chinese expression habits as much as possible. The following conclusions can be drawn on the basis of the above analysis:first, communicative translation theory plays a significant guiding role in the translation of the vocative text Asking the Flowers. In the process of translating, the translator should always stand in the shoes of the target readers, get rid of the rigid restriction of original language structure and diction,so as to achieve optimal translation effects;second, translation is not a simple conversion between two different languages, because the source language and target language are not exactly equivalent. Therefore,it is necessary to understand the creation background of the original text and the social-cultural background of the target readers before translating. It is expected that this thesis will provide reference for the translation of similar text in the future.
