This is a project report on the translation of Chapter?of The Vanishing of American Adult: Our Coming-of-Age Crisis and How to Rebuild a Culture of Self-reliance authored by Ben Sasse,an American senator. The book analyses the coming-of age crisis facing the American millennials, expounds reasons for this phenomenon, and gives corresponding solutions. The chosen chapter mainly describes changes of parenting methods on the basis of the comparison between last generations. The chapter cites a lot of surveys and statistics from authorized research institutions and media,as well as research results of scholars, which enables the social reality to be clearly presented. With clear logic, the book gives emphasis to narration and reasoning. As it entails topics such as history, religion, health care, science and technology, there are a certain number of proper nouns and terms in the context.Additionally, the author is skilled at using dashes to break off readers' regular reading rhythm to maintain the vitality and tension of the context, which emerges as one of prominent writing styles of the book.Taking Eugene Nida's functional equivalence as a guiding theory, the translator combines the theory with linguistic features of the source text and raises a series of systematic solutions to two major difficulties in translating. On the one hand, the translator adopts established translations, literal translation and adaptation to translate proper nouns. On the other, the translator applies transference, omission, other Chinese words and punctuation to process dash, aiming to make the rendering more reader-friendly.Parenting would not stop unless life ends. The project is designed to provide references for parenting skills of Chinese parents and to help some perplexed youths find their life goals. The translation report includes five parts: Chapter One briefly introduces the translation project, including the background, significance and structure.Chapter Two is designed to depict the source text, including the identity of the author and detailed information of the source text.Chapter Three describes the outline of Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory and its practical combination with this translation project.Chapter Four enumerates difficulties encountered in the translating and corresponding solutions.Chapter Five, the last part, summarizes experiences learned from the translating and demonstrates problems to be tackled.
