The historical work is a record of human society during a certain period. The translation of the English historical work can help people learn about foreign culture and history, which plays a significant part in cross-cultural communication among countries.Skopos theory maintains that translational action is determined by its skopos, which provides a new perspective for translation of historical works.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translator completes translation of An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States,a work by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz,an American historian and writer, and then carries out a research on the translation of first six chapter of the source text. The translator explores translation strategies and methods for translating the historical work, and meanwhile improve her translation ability. The thesis mainly solves two questions.First, how should the translator carry out the translation research under the guidance of three rules of Skopos theory? According to text features of the historical work, what methods should the translator adopt to make the translation faithful and fluent? In order to answer the above questions, the translator firstly takes the Skopos rule as the primary rule to choose translation skills, and also gives consideration to rules of coherence and fidelity at the same time.According to text features of historical works, the translator applies conversion, supplement, enantiosis, combination, inversion and sequential translation into translation. In a word, under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translator hopes to convey an indigenous peoples' history to target readers with these methods.
