This is a report on the E-C translation of Chapter 3 of Multimodality,Cognition, and Experimental Literature. The monograph builds up a framework of multimodal cognitive poetics within which its theoretical foundations are presented at length, followed by practical application into multimodal novels. The book is of high academic and practical value, which broadens the scope of cognitive poetics, and promotes multidisciplinary research across literary criticism, cognitive linguistics and multimodal studies. As an academic monograph,Multimodality,Cognition, and Experimental Literature is written in a very formal style, loaded with terms and complicated sentence structures, which brings two major challenges for translation,i.e.,searching well accepted Chinese equivalents to terms and compounds, and applying proper translation methods to long and complicated sentences. This report,by employing methods such as literature consulting, case study and translation comparison, presents a specific introduction of the three stages during translation,i.e.preparation,expression and review stages, and conducts systematic analysis over the challenges met in translation at the lexical and syntactical levels. At the lexical level,it is mainly concerned with the translation methods of terms and compounds, such as searching appropriate Chinese equivalents by consulting online dictionaries and relevant literature. At the syntactic level, the report chooses telling examples to illustrate the application of such translation methods as amplification, division and inversion,so as to make the Chinese version more coherent and logical. In addition, this report explores the use and function of single and double quotation marks as well as italics in the monograph. The author hopes that this report, which provides a summary of translation difficulties and methods, will be conducive to the translation of similar academic monograph.
