This report is based on the author's practice of translating a journal article Cost Analysis of Oil,Gas,and Geothermal Well Drilling.The author chooses P.Newmark's communicative translation as theoretical support.By analyzing communicative translation,the author summarizes three guiding standards for translation.Firstly,the translator needs to produce the same effect on the TL readers as was produced by the original text on the SL readers.Secondly,the translator needs to be TL reader-oriented.Thirdly,the language should be smooth,simple and clear.With the guidance of these standards,the author offers some specific methods in the process of translation by analyzing some typical examples from different levels.All these were to guarantee a smooth and accurate translation,and eventually to achieve the communicative purpose of translation.This translation report consists of four parts.The first part is task description,including the source of the text,text features,research purpose and significance.The second part is process description,which includes pre-translation preparation(background knowledge preparation,glossary building,translation tools preparation),P.Newmark's communicative translation theory,comprehension and expression,revision and modification.The third part is the main body of this translation report.In this part,the author analyzes some typical examples of translation from lexical level,syntactic level and textural level and points out the methods and techniques used in translation with the guidance of communicative translation standards.The last part is conclusion,in which the author summarizes some effective methods for translating this kind of materials.
