Red Poppies is a novel with unique ethnic characteristics written by Tibetan writer Alai.It is rich in culture and is considered a pearl of modern Chinese literature.Since it was published in 1998,Chinese researchers have conducted numerous studies on this novel from different aspects. The book, translated by Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin,reached its English-speaking audience in2002 and the English version was selected as one of the 100 best books of that year by The Los Angeles Times Book Review.Although the English version aroused researchers' attention abroad and at home, there are few researches conducted on it.At a time that we are calling for Chinese culture going global,as a successful case of Chinese literature work well-accepted by the foreign market, the English translation is sure of high research values and guiding significance. In this thesis, the author will conduct studies on the translation strategies adopted by the translators of Red Poppies under the theoretical framework of Skopostheorie. In the analysis of the translation, the following questions will be mainly focused on: translation with respect to Skopostheorie, strategies adopted by the translators under the framework of the three basic rules and the relationship among them,as well as what guiding principles we could draw from the translation.Based on the analysis, the author reaches the following conclusions:(1)The skopos of translating Red Poppies are: introducing this excellent Chinese novel to the English world as well as earning profits.(2)In the process of translation, the translators adopted various strategies such as rewriting, adding, omitting, transliterating and so on to meet the skopos of the translation.(3)Translators need to follow the internal relations among the three basic rules of Skopostheorie.(4)Skopostheorie is applicable to literature translation and assessment of literature translation works as it is flexible, emphasizes the status of translators and involves various aspects. This thesis,it is hoped, will add to the richness of studies on the English translation of Red Poppies,to provide some practical use for the future Chinese literary translation, especially those literature works with ethnic characteristics.
