| In modern times,the great progress of science and technology cannot be made without cooperation between countries or regions all around the world.The good cooperation in the world depends on good EST translation;as a result,EST translation is in great need.For instance,as Chinese version of Scientific American,the magazine has given latest scientific information in many fields such as astronomy,biology and nature translated from authorized magazines and newspapers for decades.Developed in the 1970 s in Germany by the functionalists,Skopos Theory has been improved over the past decades.Now it can be concluded that there are three core rules in Skopos Theory: skopos rule,coherence rule and function plus loyalty rule.Among the three rules,the skopos rule is more important than the other two rules,for the skopos rule indicates the communicative function of Skopos Theory.Since Skopos Theory emphasizes on communicative function,it can be applied to EST translation.The paper tries to make strategic study on English source text and Chinese translations which have been published on Chinese version of Scientific American(From May,2015 until now)from the perspective of Skopos Theory.First,technical terms are commonly used in ETS and need a specific translation.Based on this point,the writer studies the accuracy of terms,expression of terms in a particular context.Second,Chinese and English are quite different in many ways such as syntax structures and cultural background.Therefore,when translation needs to be done between the two languages,the writer has to take syntax and cultural context into consideration.Finally,English discourse differs from Chinese counterpart.English discourse emphasizes on logic and coherence which are called hypotaxis and Chinese part favors a few short sentences that are called parataxis.In addition,the translation is mostly influenced by bilingual ability of translator.In a conclusion,the paper studies how Skopos Theory can be applied to the chosen articles. |
