This is an E-C translation report. The source text is excerpted from The Master Who Embraces Simplicity: A Study of the Philosopher Ko Hung,A.D.283-343,written by Jay Sailey,an American sinologist. The author chose the introduction and the second chapter,Ko Hung's literature thoughts as the source material for the practice. The source text is rich in colorful quotes and well-knit analysis. As a scholarly monograph, the source text accords with the features of an informative text.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology, this report focuses on exploring detailed translation methods for scholarly monographs by applying communicative translation. This report can be dissected into five chapters: the first chapter,“Introduction”,briefly introduces the background of the task, significance of the task and the translation process. The second chapter is the theoretical basis, which mainly discusses Newmark's classification of language function and text type, and elaborates two translation strategies under his text typology. The third chapter, source text analysis, includes a brief introduction to the writer and content of the book,an analysis on the linguistic features of the source text as well as identification of the source text's type. The fourth chapter, namely the body of the report,is the case analysis.Combining the identification of the text type of the source text—an informative text, the author first chooses a corresponding translation strategy for this type of text,i.e.communicative translation.Next, under such a translation strategy, the author presents a few of applicable and detailed translation methods on the lexical, syntactic and textual level. The last chapter concludes with some major findings and reflections of the author. The author thinks that translation of foreign research achievements can fuel domestic scholars to know about foreign researches on Chinese culture.Through this academic dialogue, the confidence and consciousness to conduct academic researches centering on this theme could be strengthened.Besides, the author hopes that the practice could promote domestic scholars to have a multi-perspective research on Ko Hung and this report could be used as a reference for the translation of similar texts.
