People's living standard has been improved with the fast development of society and rapid growth of economy.On one hand,modern Chinese females not only stress the improvement of their accomplishments and social positions,but also their appearances.On the other hand,as people become more open-minded,males start to use skincare and make-up products to prink themselves.According to the data from Euromonitor,in 2015 in China,cosmetics of international brands are better recognized and accepted by Chinese customers than domestic cosmetics.Therefore,more and more cosmetics of foreign brands flood into Chinese market,especially European and American brands,the import volume of which ranks the highest among all imported cosmetics.However,between Western and Chinese people,there are deeply rooted distinctions of region,race,culture,history,aesthetics and life style.It is hence very crucial to pay as much attention to the feature of Chinese market and Chinese customers in advertisement and promotion as that in research and development of international cosmetic products.In advertisement and promotion,the most important aspect is the function of cosmetics,which motivates customers to purchase products.For this reason,the translation of the function is key factor of the translation of cosmetics.Based on Jef Verschueren's Theory of Contextual Adaptation,this dissertation examines the process of interpreting the function of cosmetics.Comparative cases study are conducts and analyses both the successful and unsuccessful cases in depth,thus to testify the importance of its adapting to the language user,mental world,social world and physical world in the interpretation process.Therefore,it could provide interpreters with new clue and ideas to grasp customers' mind and then increase the competitiveness of the cosmetics.
