In recent years, an increasing number of Chinese cosmetics have been found inthe market and have enjoyed an expanding market share. As the carrier of productioninformation, cosmetics instructions serve as the bridge between companies andconsumers and play essential roles in business success. Yet, studies on the translationof cosmetics instructions, especially the translation from Chinese into English (C-Etranslation), are inadequate and incomplete, which hinder the promotion and sales ofdomestic cosmetics in the Western market. Based on the collected examples, thisthesis conducts an analysis on the functions and stylistic features of cosmeticsinstructions, and makes a comparison between Chinese cosmetics instructions andEnglish cosmetics instructions. Furthermore, this paper intends to adoptVerschueren’s Adaptation Theory to study the C-E translation of cosmeticsinstructions from the perspective of linguistic structural adaptation (lexical, syntacticand textual) and contextual adaptation (ways of thinking, cultural factors andaesthetic psychology). Through the analysis, some problems of C-E cosmeticsinstruction translation will be unveiled and better translation methods:omission, restructuring and foreignization will be proposed. It is hoped that the study will playas a guiding role in C-E cosmetics instruction translation and improve the marketreception of Chinese cosmetics brands in the oversea market.
