The translation text of the thesis is an excerpt from There Are Jews in My House(2003)by Lara Vapnya(1971-),who is an uprising American Jewish writer with Russian background. She is called "Jane Austen with a Russian soul",and she "blends coolness and pathos" in her writing, which endows her writing with enormous value both in literature itself and translation. The Skopos theory was invented by German functionalist school in the 1970s,with its dominant emphasis on the purpose of translation and attention to the communicative demands of target readers.Since then,it has been applied widely in the translation of various types of texts, such as technical texts, tourism text as well as literary text etc. This thesis takes the Skopos theory as theoretical guidance, and aims to make a systematic study on the translation strategies and methods employed in the translation practice via corresponding case analysis. As the primary principle of Skopos theory, skopos principle gives instructions on multiple levels of translation, typically lexical, syntactic and discourse level, and translation strategies like repetition, adjustment of word order as well as shift of voice are used.Under the guidance of coherence principle, the translation methods like amplification and splitting are adopted;under the guidance of fidelity principle, annotation and word-for-word translation are employed respectively.Through a comparatively comprehensive case analysis under the fundamental principles of Skopos theory, the thesis not only facilitates the introduction and acceptance of high-quality American Jewish literature in China but meanwhile justifies the effectiveness of Skopos theory in the translation of literary text, which will be definitely conducive to the further research in relevant field.
