A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of The TED Talk Of How Online Abuse Of Women Has Spiraled Out Of Control

TED(short for Technology,Entertainment and Design),famous for TED Conference,is a nonprofit media organization.Recent years have witnessed that TED Talks gained its popularity at home and abroad;however,the number of translators involved in TED Talks is far from enough,entailing the consequence that the audience have no access to multiple great speeches.Besides,the quality of subtitles varies from one to another in that the translators are miscellaneous volunteers.Fortunately,the author joined the translation community of TED and translated the talk—How Online Abuse of Women Has Spiraled out of Control.This speech was given by Ashley Judd,famous American actress and feminist.She was named as Time's coveted 2017 Person of the Year,because she was the first person to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment.This report discusses available translation strategies and methods in translating the subtitles of TED talks in the light of the author's one practice on the official website of TED.This report is comprised of five parts.The first part is the general introduction.The second chapter is task description,namely,task objective and features of the source text,including features of TED talk and features of subtitles.The third chapter introduces the relevance translation theory,and the relevance-oriented translation strategies.The fourth chapter is the case analysis,in which the author employs a few translation methods including literal translation,employment idioms,amplification and absolute zero translation on the lexical level to remove obstacles for audience;the author applies free translation and order readjustment on the syntactic level to enable the target text to satisfy the linguistic features of Chinese language.In the end,the author makes a summary of effective translation theory,strategy and methods,and proposes some shortcomings and suggestions.
