Research On Viet Nam To Participate In The Association Of ASEAN Security Cooperation Motivation

History in relations between Vietnam and ASEAN countries has revealed that this sort of relations has experienced a variety of ups and downs. During cold war, Vietnam-ASEAN relations were overwhelmed by mutual confrontation, doubts. After cold war, their relations warmed up, which led to Vietnam's official membership in ASEAN by 1995. The Vietnam's enrollment in ASEAN can be considered as an important milestone for the solidarity, expansion and integration of ASEAN.The thesis looks at both conventional and non-conventional security cooperation to analyze, study and explain the reason why Vietnam has been active in security cooperation with ASEAN since its enrollment. In terms of conventional security, there is a territorial dispute between Vietnam and several neighboring ASEAN countries. In addition, Vietnam is socialist, vulnerable to political intervention by external-ASEAN power nations through ethnic, religious issues, which disrupts political security in Vietnam. Therefore, the engagement and enhancement of security cooperation with ASEAN countries as well as reinforcement of internal capacity shall support Vietnam's peace development. In terms of non-conventional security, like other countries, Vietnam is facing with increasingly more serious non-conventional security issues such as climate change, terrorism, epidemics, etc. Non-conventional security is characterised by properties such as sudden occurrence, international scope, so on. Moreover, Vietnam's capacity is limited. Thus, to solve global, non-conventional security issueas requires the cooperation among countries. As a result, Vietnam hopes that its security cooperation with ASEAN countries will boost efforts to cope with security threats, which leads to promote cooperation between Vietnam and ASEAN block.Furthermore, ASEAN countries are small and medium-sized. Together with endless globalization, dynamic development of Southeast Asia region after 21st century and USA's "rebalancing Pacific Asia" strategy aimed to Southeast Asia region, result in the certain increased presence of power countries in Southeast Asia region. For the sake of security for itself and the whole region, Southeast Asian countries can only unite to cope with international, regional security issues. Only by this way, can Southeast Asia region in general and each country in particular develop well. By analyzing current situation and achievements in security cooperation in Southeast Asia region, the thesis aims to study the security cooperation process between Vietnam and ASEAN countries, and in the context of globalization, explain the reason why Vietnam promotes security cooperation with ASEAN countries, as well as assess the tendency of security cooperation between Vietnam and ASEAN block and future Southeast Asia security.
