A Study On China-related Literature Released By Foreign Affairs After The Cold War (1989-2016)

Foreign Affairs is the regular publication of the Foreign Relations Committee-a well-known think tank of the United States,is also the most authoritative and important international political publications in the world.It has great influence both in the United States and the international community.Through the combing and analysis of Chinese literature in Foreign Affairs after the Cold War,this paper discusses the Chinese national image presented in those literature,and then summarizes the fractional and holistic cognition.Combined with historical facts,it studies the trends,nodes and reasons in China’s cognitive of the related scholars.The main body of this paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the basic situation of Foreign Affairs,includes the establishment and development of this publication,besides the position of the publication and its changes.The second chapter summarizes the contents of China-related literature released by Foreign Affairs after the Cold War,includes four aspects of diplomatic military,political,economic and social culture.Foreign scholars,especially American scholars,have been involved in international and domestic issues on China,and have maintained long-term concerns about current or future issues that may affect Sino-US relations.This chapter classifies the Chinese literature after the Cold War,and summarizes the contents of the literature as a whole.The third chapter introduces fractional cognition to China of Foreign Affairs.This paper divides the complete post-cold war period into three stages:1989-2001,2002-2011,2012-2016 by the standard of the Chinese leaders.The paper analyzes the content and characteristics of the literature in every stage,focusing on the key issues of continuous emergence in different periods and the new issues put forward by the scholars.Mainly includes Sino-US relations,foreign policy,economic rise and reform and domestic issues of China.The fourth chapter analyzes the holistic cognition to China of Foreign Affairs after the Cold War.Mainly includes the rise of China and its international influence from two aspects.The first issue is "what happened in China," specifically refers to the performance and the problem of rise after the Cold War.And the second issue is "what will China do?" the China will strengthen the cooperation with the United States under the current order,or will confront with the United States and the current order.China choose the third option,that is actively building the new rules under the current order.In the fifth chapter,the paper analyzes the evolution of cognition to China of Foreign Affairs after the Cold War,and the change of cognition is influenced by American strategy and Chinese dynamics.On the whole,the tends is stable,consistent with the basic strategy of the United States.And because of China’s domestic and foreign policies and behavior,the change has characteristic of stress.This situation is caused by the post-cold-war international environment,the relevant scholars’ pursue of the national interests and the challenges from the rise of China and so on.
