The research on the history of higher medical education is important and realistic.Modern higher medical education in China originated from the Western medical education and also the missionary hospitals founded by Western missionaries during the period of “Eastward Spread of Western Culture” in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.In the turbulent era of Republic of China(1912—1949),Western medical education developed rapidly in China,which laid a solid foundation for the rapid development of modern higher medical education and medical sciences of China.The National Chung Cheng Medical College was founded as initiated by the famous physiologist doctor Lin Kesheng on the ground of breaking the control of Chinese medical education by foreigners and developing “the system of public health service” of China.Wang Zigan served as the first and the only dean of this college.This college,founded in Nanchang,Jiangxi Province,witnessed anti-Japanese aggression war and the Liberation War successively.It was relocated for seven times because of the war,and was renamed as Nanchang Medical School after the founding of new China in 1949.In as few as 13 years during which the college was named as the National Chung Cheng Medical College,it went through a lot of difficulties,but still survived the war.More than that,it managed to develop itself in the baptism of fire and constantly radiated vigor of life.It cultivated a large number of medical experts and elites,who had an important effect in the medical history of China and in the history of higher education.This research studies the history of the National Chung Cheng Medical College,its path of development,and the origin that sustains its vitality,explores the role of its philosophy of schooling in the higher medical education of China in an unusual historical environment,and investigates the enlightenment it sheds on modern higher medical education of China and the reform of higher education.It not only fills the gaps of historical research,but also provides important and far-reaching theoretical guidance and has realistic significance.It is true that research on history needs the support of a large number of detailed historical facts.At present,the research on the school-running history and characteristics of the National Chung Cheng Medical College is lacking at home and abroad.Limited by a lack of the research data and the depth of the study,this paper primarily makes use of the methods of literature research,on-the-spot reconnaissance,in-depth interviews,etc.By extensively collecting,systematically examining,and analyzing the original data,this paper strives to comprehensively and truly reveal the history of the National Chung Cheng Medical College,concisely summarize its ideas of running a school,and further explore its historical enlightenment to promote the development of current and future higher medical education of China and the reform of higher education.This paper can be divided into six parts.The first part serves as the introduction.It mainly introduces the background,objectives and significance of the research,the basic principles and methods of historical research,and the definition of basic concepts.This part summarizes the status of the research on the characteristics of the school-running ideas of the National Chung Cheng Medical College,puts forward the historical significance of the research,and defines the relevant concepts,such as the Republic of China,National Chung Cheng Medical College,higher medical education,the characteristics of school running,etc.It introduces the general research design,and the specific research methods,and also designs research technical route.The second part is about the research on the school-running history of the National Chung Cheng Medical College.Beginning with the analysis of social background for the founding of this college,this part explores the necessity and significance of the establishment of this college.By reviewing the historical clues,this part sorts out and explores the migration route of this college,and outlines a road map of its overall development and transition.The third part is about the research on the school-running status of this college.This part probes into and summarizes its philosophy of schooling and educational objectives.By sorting out the historical document,this part represents its curriculum design,the quality of teaching staff,teaching characteristics,student performance and elimination system,quality of education,teaching management and campus culture construction,etc.,to provide a rationale for further refining its school-running characteristics.The fourth part further refines the schooling characteristics of the National Chung Cheng Medical College.By investigating its school-running status,this part summarizes some general rules and features.In addition,it concludes that this college has some unique features of school running philosophy: by taking a global vision of seeking development,it carried the torch of patriotism,adopted the educational ideology of selfless dedication,lifted an undaunted spirit of marching forward courageously and perseveringly,and clung to ideals and conviction of pursuing excellence,etc.The fifth part aims to explore the enlightenment which can be gained from the unique features of the school-running philosophy of the National Chung Cheng Medical College.Based on the current development of life sciences and the tasks of higher medical education brought by economic and social development of China,this part explores the enlightenment on the development and reform of military universities and higher medical education,which can be gained from the school-running characteristics of National Chung Cheng Medical College.The sixth part is a summary of the whole paper.This part mainly summarizes the overall research,puts forwards the innovations and limitations of this research,and discusses the conduction of future in-depth research.
