Nowadays, the land problem has become a key issue in China, and the interests of land has also become the core benefit which relates to all people. As we all know,China is at a stage of accelerated urbanization and industrialization. As a result, rural land was being invaded by administrative force directly or indirectly.Small pieces of land owned by farmers has transferred to the hands of the government or enterprises gradually.Thousands of villages were in the process of ending.Construction of Million Hectares of Farmland is one of the Government project which is intended to realize urbanization in rural area, extension of agricultural scale and peasants' citizenization. In this study, the author investigated a concrete project of this kind in Jinghai District. What the author want to know is--why it happened, how it works, and what impacts it will entail. What the author found is that this project has brought about a drastic social transition.Agriculture has been de-embedded from the rural community.Smallholders are excluded from the agricultural production. They acquire the resettlement housing in return for giving up their land. The organic link between man and nature, production and life, contemporary people and the ancients are broken. The complex rural space is collapsed under the administrative coercive power. In the author's opinion, there are three reasons for the happening.Firstly, the social consensus--transforming the countryside—affects the behavior of the local authority directly.Secondly, the economic interests and political benefits of land impel the local authority towards eroding the villages.Thirdly, the land is controlled by the state, and the local authority can impose the land compulsorily. The first chapter is intended to provide a comprehensive generalization of the research findings in the past. The author introduces a set of concepts—the spontaneous ending of villages and the mandatory ending of villages. The second chapter researches the policy background and the operational conditions of the Construction of Million Hectares of Farmland. The third chapter discripts the project area, time schedule, sources of funds, land use, resettlement compensation scheme and conflict of interest in the project of Jinghai. The fourth chapter discusses the specific formation of the ending of the countryside. In the fifth chapter, the author explains why the mandatory ending of villages comes true.
