In 1970 s, China began to implement family planning policy; it has controlled the growth of population effectively and brought about the “only-child family”. As time passes by, the “shidu family”(family with a loss of the only child) forms if the only child suffers any accident in the growth process. In recent years, the “shidu family” has aroused wide attention from government, social media and scholars and it's considered as a severe social problem demanding prompt solution. The difficulties that the “shidu family” is confronted with include the lack of reliable material sources as well as the companionship of the next generation, discrimination from society and lack of spiritual consolation. The most important fact is that the “shidu family” can't bear the mental shock from child death and is likely to suffer psychological and mental diseases. With the increase of “shidu family”, the difficulties that the “shidu parents” are confronted with have aroused wider attention from the society. From the perspective of social work and psychological adjustment, a case study of the “shidu mother” in a community of L City, i.e. Aunt Wang is carried out in accordance with the basic theory and purpose of social work and psychology and Aunt Wang is finally relieved from minor depression through intervention in the difficulties that she is confronted with. The paper firstly refers to the social work intervention researches on shidu family and then probes into the theories such as social work, “shidu family”, empowerment and social support, etc. In combination with Aunt Wang's difficulties, it's essential to intervene in the case by means of social work and psychological methods. Through initial contact, it's found that Aunt Wang was deeply affected by the loss of daughter, who was in a state of being in a daze, staying indoors all day long and losing confidence in life, so it's judged as minor depression. After establishing a relationship of mutual trust, the social worker delved into Aunt Wang's specific situation, confirmed the feasibility of assistance and formulated the assistance plan. The assistance work was finished in two months and through the intervention for eight times, Aunt Wang has been gradually guided to walk out the door and participate in social activities enthusiastically; her relatives and friends were mobilized to implement the assistance plan and accompany Aunt Wang to watch the movies with the theme of curing the wound, learn embroidery and pray for blessings in temple, etc. Eventually, Aunt Wang has the courage to face the reality that her daughter has died and participate in the community activities for the elderly. Finally, the whole process of assistance is reviewed, the achievements in the case and the changes which have taken place in Aunt Wang are evaluated, and the countermeasures for providing effective assistance for “shidu family” are proposed. The paper is an explorative research concerning the case work intervention into “shidu family”, aiming to provide a reference for assisting in “shidu family”.
