Validation Of The Short Grit Scale Among Chinese University And Secondary School Students

The concept of grit was first proposed by American psychologist Angela Duckworth and grit means perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Previous studies have shown that grit can forecast academic performance and job performance.Foreign researchers conducted many grit studies and developed a series of girt scales based on those studies. However, there are very few domestic grit research and those research only focused on introducing the concept of grit. In this study, we would like to translate the Short Grit Scale which was developed by Duckworth and then test the reliability and the validity in large samples. The main purpose of this study is to provide domestic researchers with a reliable and valid grit scale which is suitable for Chinese students. We used the Chinese version of Short Grit Scale, the conscientiousness sub-scale in the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory, the Brief Self-Control Scale, the Mental Toughness Inventory and the informant versions of Short Grit Scale in 254 ordinary college students, 330 college students majoring art,222 college students majoring sports and 310 ordinary middle school students.The results included that the internal consistency reliability and the test-retest reliability of the scale are satisfactory. Confirmatory factor analyzes(CFA) supported the factorial validity of the two-factor model of grit. Criteria validity was supported by moderate correlations between the Grit-S and the conscientiousness sub-scale from the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory, the Brief Self-Control Scale and the Mental Toughness Inventory. The moderate correlation between the informant-report version and the self-report version of the Grit-S showed the consensual validity is also satisfactory. We also obtained the time for Internet/TV and results in final examination to test the empirical validity of the Grit-S and the results support it. In short, our study showed that the Short Grit Scale is a useful tool for accessing Chinese college and middle school students' grit.
