The Correlation Research Of Undergraduate's Empathy And Sexual Harassment Misunderstanding

Sexual harassment is a worldwide problem which does harm to the physical and psychological health of individuals.In recent years,the phenomenon of sexual harassment is growing,and with the news of sexual harassment in the college or workplace continues to be exposed,sexual harassment gradually attracted people's attention.The domestic and foreign scholars have done a lot of research on sexual harassment,mainly including the definition and the type of sexual harassment,as well as the awareness of harassment of sexual harassment,and so on.Due to the influence of Chinese traditional view of chasteness,there are some misunderstanding of sexual harassment in the individual's cognition.Therefore,female victims often suffer blame,which result that women usually choose to keep silence after experienced sexual harassment,for fear of secondary victimization.And the silence of the victims led to the growing phenomenon of sexual harassment.In recent years,scholars have started to conduct a series of theoretical research and empirical research on the misunderstanding of sexual harassment because of the great harm of it.In addition,as an positive ability of the individual,empathy have a significant impact on the cognition of sexual harassment.This research focus on the empathy's influence on the misunderstanding of sexual harassment,exploring the relationship of empathy and the misunderstanding of sexual harassment.In Two questionnaires,(1)the Sexual Harassment Myth Acceptance Scale,(2)the Interpersonal Reactivity Index,were administered to a sample of 400 college students.SPSS 18.0 analysis was used to analyze the data,including descriptive statistics,normality test,t-test,correlation analysis,analysis of variance.Results are as follows:(1)The Sexual Harassment Myth Acceptance Scale has four dimensions which are the fabrication and exaggeration of sexual harassment incident,ulterior motive of sexual harassment accusation,natural heterosexuality,woman's responsibility of refusing.(2)The Sexual Harassment Myth Acceptance Scale has a good reliability and validity.The Cronbach a is 0.895>0.70,indicating the good reliability of the scale.And exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis also proved the construct validity of the scale is good.(3)Gender has a significant effect on individual's acceptance of the misunderstanding of sexual harassment(t=11.86,p=.000<0.001).That is,males havemore acceptance than women of sexual harassment misunderstanding.(4)Empathy has a significantly negative correlation with accepting of sexual harassment misunderstanding(t=-11.845,p=.000<0.001).That is,the higher empathy is associated with the lower accepting of sexual harassment misunderstanding.(5)Empathy and gender have significant interactive effect on individuals'acceptance of sexual harassment misunderstanding(the coefficient is-.286,p<0.05).That is,male with high empathy still has significant more acceptance than female with high empathy of sexual harassment misunderstanding.In the end of this research,I try to give further analysis and discussion of these results,and make the considerations and reflections on the shortcomings of the study.And I also make some suggestions for the direction of future research.
