A Study On Student-Engagement And Its Influencing Factors Of MSW Students

This paper presents a study about the situation and influencing factors of MSW students' Student-engagement.Enough first-hand materials are collected through in-depth interviews on students in three grades and their instructor from S University.Then,these materials are analyzed from three aspects including "vitality" "dedication"and " absorption ",with the perspectives of social work and self-growth of MSW students.The study finds that,under three-year training system of S University,the condition of MSW students' Student-engagement shows periodic fluctuation.For the first year,the Student-engagement condition is generally good,shows "strong-weak-strong" in degree.For the second year,the Student-engagement condition is poor,shows "weak-weak-weak" in degree.For the third year,the Student-engagement is also in good condition,shows "strong-weak-strong" in degree.In other words,it appears strong in the beginning and the end of the first and third academic years,while poor in the middle.And the general condition is poor for the second year,which is the intermediate stage of three grades.The changing process of Student-engagement is described and analyzed based on influential events occurring at each stage.It's found that individual characteristics,family and society impact the situation of Student-engagement mostly.Among them,the individual characteristics mainly involves Learning attitudes,self-demand,coping style and self-planning.The family factors mainly involves family economic situation and family cultural capital.The society factors mainly involves school management,Learning environment,interpersonal interaction,and career development.Finally,the reflection is reviewed about how to improve the study on the MSW students' Student-engagement.And based on this study,some proposals are offered including perfecting the school education system and teaching process,adjusting the teaching content,improving the interaction between students,students and teachers,establishing "dialogue partners" relationships between student-groups,reshaping students' sense of learning and so on.
