A Survey And Research On Master Degree Education Of Social Work And Its Employment Issues

Western social work education came into being due to requirements of the specialization and professionalization of social work, and with a long development, has formed an all-around and highly improved concept of social work and its practical methods. However, precedent to its specialization and professionalization, the education of social work has been working as specialty for a bunch of graduates. Current social work education in the Mainland, as an important system for training social work professionals, has many problems, such as indeterminacy of the concept of social work education, inefficient training model, which results in disappointed outcome. Therefore, it’s proposed in this paper that an overall self-examination and standardization on social work education is touch and go. It is of urgency and theoretical and practical significance that several proposals be made based on an investigation carried out in seven colleges and universities possessing master’s degree for social work in Jiangsu Province for the purpose of being kept informed of its situation and deficiency.It has been clearly showed in the investigation about the cognitive situation in Chinese mainland of master degree of social work education. First of all, the curriculum is not complete. Secondly, limited amount of teachers are dedicated into this mentioned profession with limited professional level. Thirdly, the form of examination is monotonous with lack of practice. Fourth, ethical value of master degree of social work is insufficient. There has been a more or less negative attitude on employment of people graduating as master in social work characterized with low level of recognition, inadequate preparation, ambiguous employment preference and will. On one hand, there are a large number of personnel especially trained for social work in China. On the other hand, a bunch of social work professionals are unwilling to engage in social work as a career. Specific causes are as follows:firstly, lack of macro-environment has an impact on the professional identity of the master of social work. Secondly, the scarcity of educational resources affects the employment psychology of the master in social work.In the perspective of society ecosystems theory, the writer makes the following recommendations to promote the development of social work education and its specialization and professionalization. In the macro system:Firstly, to improve investment in social work education. Secondly, to gradually change the big-government, small-community features. In the mezzo-system:Firstly, to normalize the curriculum arrangement of social work master degree education and diversify its examination methods. Secondly, to ameliorate teachers’professional level in social work, establishing new system of superintendency with a more completed internship put into it Thirdly, to train teachers with high capacity and critical perspective. Fourth, to speed up its specialization and professionalization. Fifth, to build in social work values. In the micro-system, it is desperately needed that MSW students in social work should study more of social work expertise, have a clear career plan and establish a correct concept of employment.
