The studies of the professional development of teachers first got popular in European and Asian countries in the 1960 s.However,it didn't until the 1990 s such studies began to catch Chinese scholars' attention.In China,they have undergone the stages of the discussion on the concept and the standard of the professional development of teachers,its paths and its strategies.After careful analysis,the author found such studies concerning English teachers were quite few both theoretically and practically.Therefore,based on plenty of previous studies,aimed at offering guidance for the professional development of English teachers,this thesis explored the current situation of English teachers in Muping District,Yantai City,analyzed some prominent problems and their causes,summarized some strategies and offered some suggestions to improve their professions and to make the teachers obtain self-renewal.By the understanding of the professional development of English teachers of junior high school of this district for many years,the author designed the questionnaire of The Survey of the Professional Development of English Teachers of Junior High School in Muping District,Yantai City.Thanks to this survey,the current situation of the professional development of English teachers in this area had been figured out.At the same time,interviews with the related leaders and teachers laid basis for future studies.Then,the author analyzed the data of this survey of 160 samples.The status quo and its influencing factors were explored to further investigate the paths for the professional development of English teachers.At last,based on the results of quantified data and qualified interviews,the model and some operable strategies for English teachers to develop their professions were constructed.By analyzing the results of the survey and with the help of the author's own understanding of teachers' professional development,the author found out the main problems in the professional development of teachers in junior high school.Firstly,the internal factor was about the teachers' personal reasons,for example,they couldn't master their professional language knowledge and skills;they couldn't have the ability to know about enough pedagogic and educational knowledge,curriculum resource exploitation and teaching strategies;besides,they lack the consciousness of self-development.The external factor were various,including the restrict from the nation and government,the problems caused by school and the particularity of the physical and mental development of middle school students,etc.Meanwhile,the author gave the reasons to each problem.The author deems that some urgent problems need to be solved for English teachers to develop their professions.Based on the above,the author offers the following suggestions for the professional development of teachers in junior high school from different aspects.Firstly,the teachers should improve their expertise knowledge,especially to improve their language knowledge,language skills,as well as curriculum resource exploitation and teaching strategies,so as to improve their professional quality.And,they need some proper psychological counseling.Secondly,the nation and government need to do something,including improving teachers' wages and benefits by making,revising and complying with the laws;promoting teachers' social positions to offer spiritual strength;reducing the pressure and easing the burdens for teachers to spare enough energy and time for teachers' professional development;increasing the numbers for teachers' professional titles so as to provide hope and guarantee in teachers' working prospects;supervising and integrated planning of teachers' professional training by strengthening efficient management and control;and forming scientific and rational training patterns.Thirdly,schools need to make rules and systems and show humanistic care for teachers so as to guarantee the quality of teachers' professional development.This includes making perfect systems,stimulating the teachers to absorb and share knowledge from outside,promoting English teachers' consciousness of action in professional development,and considering teachers' sufferings and hardships to exclude teachers' living difficulties and anxieties.
