In the 1920 s and 1930 s,James Yen,and the Chinese National Association of Mass Education Movements(MEM),guided by him carried out the rural reconstruction movement in Ding Xian.Adhering to the tenet of “removing illiterates and being new citizens”,he and his colleagues combined the western scientific knowledge with China's reality,made detailed investigation and scientific practice,explored and formed the civilian education system whose core were the four main education contents including “literature education,livelihood education,health education and citizen education” and three main education strategies including “school,society and family”.They improved farmers' living and health conditions and guided the rural construction at that time which was considered to be the beneficial exploration of solving rural problems and promoting rural modernization.The thesis starts from the practical activities of the Chinese National Association of Mass Education Movements in Ding Xian and makes a detailed analysis of the process who James Yen and his team used science and technology and organized the youth to carry out the rural construction in Ding Xian County from the modern perspective.The thesis studies James Yen and his team's experiences of overcoming difficulties,raising money and carrying out civilian education.It gets the conclusion that The Ding Xian Country experiment made by James Yen and his team was the manifestation for intellectuals to save the nation by education.It was also the beneficial attempt for intellectual elites to solve Chinese problems actively by adopting western scientific concepts.The series of hard activities they carried out enlightened the rural farmers in Ding Xian County and promoted the modernization of the rural areas.At the same time,the Ding Xian experiment implemented by MEM has brought valuable theoretical and practical wealth and provided a thinking perspective for the current authorities to implement the new rural construction in the aspects of raising and managing money,organizing the youth and launching the youth to construct the rural areas.
