Narrative is a very common linguistic form in people's conversation and expression.Researchers always explore people's narrative skills from a variety of perspectives.As for children,narrative is closely related to their language development,cognitive level and other aspects.Thus,children's narrative activities are not only educational,but also worthwhile to study.Combining children's narratives with IPAD is a new subject in 21st century,with new technology updating every day.In this context,it is possible to study Chinese children's narrative skills,as well as reflecting the impact that electronic media,representing by IPAD,might have on children's learning and development at the same time.This research chose 40 children from a kindergarten in Nanjing as samples,observing and collecting videos of how they performed in the IPAD self-recorded story-telling area in the classroom.After that,the researcher transcribed and encoded the data in three aspects,narrative structure,narrative evaluation and narrative temporality.Based on general characteristics and detailed case study,this research analyzes Chinese young children's features of narrative structure,narrative evaluation and narrative temporality.Meanwhile,it reveals what IPAD might cause to children's narrative behavior and skills.The research found that narrative based on IPAD is an advanced linguistic environment that could promote children's language development,as well as a qualified narrative environment that is good for children to tell stories.If being considered as a language activity,IPAD self-recorded story-telling area arouses children's interest.It makes children express themselves more frequently and bravely,so they can take part in the language activity more actively.During constant use of language,children perform better in narrative activities.Furthermore,in terms of the narrative skills children show in the narratives based on IPAD,taken as a whole,the narrative skills are in accordance with Chinese children's common features.Comparing with young English children in other countries,Chinese children's features of narrative structure and temporality are similar to foreign children.However,in terms of narrative evaluation,it shows great culture differences.In addition,there are some unique features when children tell stories in front of the IPAD.Finally,children's narrative structure,narrative evaluation and narrative temporality ability improve as they grow up.As a result,educators should notice and learn the features of young children's narrative skills,using IPAD in a proper way to provide them opportunities to tell stories freely.
