A Study On The Chinese Native Cultural Content In Go For It

The textbook is an important tool for students to get systematic knowledge and it is the main base of teaching.It is also the main source of cultural input for students.As we know,the series of textbooks Go For It,which is widely used in junior high schools in China as an English coursebook,introduces both English culture and Chinese culture.What detailed Chinese culture contents are introduced in the textbook? How do English teachers deal with the cultural contents in teaching? To answer these questions,this thesis makes a census of different kinds of cultural contents in the textbook Go for It and then analyzes native cultural contents in detail.After that,interviews with some English teachers are held to find out how they deal with native cultural contents in teaching.The findings suggest that although the percentage of native cultural contents in the textbooks has increased compared with the old version,the content is not explicit which needs teachers to explore the deeper meaning.In terms of native cultural contents,certain themes,such as politics and Chinese literature,are deficient.The interview with the English teachers finds out that most of the teachers lack the sense of culture and do not take the cultural content in the textbooks seriously.As for the reasons of “The Aphasia of Chinese Culture”,the following factors can give the explanation.First,there is not adequate native cultural input in the textbooks.Second,the teachers do not provide enough communicative tasks for students with which they can practice the knowledge.Third,the teachers do not have a strong sense of culture and often neglect the cultural aspect in teaching.As a result,students cannot get enough cultural input and lack the sense of culture.Based on the research findings,the thesis puts forward some pedagogical suggestions.
