STEM(Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics)has been recognized and valued by countries all over the world since its inception.For decades,it has being developed rapidly.The relationship between science,technology,engineering and mathematics is continuing to transform and integrate.In the field of education,STEM has become a new concept,a new model,a new goal,and it has become a kind of science education reform movement with different historical and cultural background.The United States has a strong representation among a number of countries where STEM education is developing actively,mainly because of its every step and link being representative and exemplary since its inception.The experience of American STEM education will certainly provide the reform and development of primary and secondary education in China with a positive and profound reference.Therefore,it will have great theoretical and practical significance to study the concept of American STEM education,to understand its deep connotation,to analyze its successful teaching practice case,to examine the conditions and environment of its implementation,including reflection on its existing problems.Chinese science education reform in primary and secondary schools has made important progress.It has cultivated a large number of scientific literacy talents for our country,it is also a strong support for national construction,and it promotes social progress and development.However,there are such problems in Chinese science education reform and development because of various reasons.The rise of the STEM education movement has undoubtedly provided us with a good opportunity for us to examine Chinese science education reform.However,because people's thinking is limited,and people habitually use the traditional old ideas to think about the rapid development of STEM education,which will lead to the more profound and richer social connotation and cultural connotation in STEM education being ignored.This paper attempts to analyze the conditions and environment of the emergence and development of STEM education and its impact on American science education by analyzing the historical development,present situation and essential characteristics of STEM education.And we also compare the history and experience of the reform and development of science education in primary and secondary schools in China with that in America.We want to discuss the possible impact and enlightenment of American STEMeducation on the reform and development of science education in primary and middle schools in China in order to explore the correct path of the reform and development of science education in primary and secondary schools in China,combined with our education practice.
