Teachers play the crucial role in education.Rural education is the fundamental of our country's education.The Outline of China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development(2010-2020)in particular stresses the need to focus on rural teachers to improve the overall quality of primary and secondary school teachers.It is undoubtedly the key to success to promote the teaching competence and teaching quality of rural English teachers,which account for a large portion of the teaching population.In view of the deepening of rural education reform and the importance of the optimization of the quality of rural teachers,we must thoroughly investigate the status quo of rural English teachers,and find out the bottlenecks of their professional development.With the country's investment in basic education in rural areas,the hardware environment has been significantly improved,but personnel investment is not optimistic.The development of English teachers in rural middle schools not only means the improvement of teaching level,the renewal of teaching methods and the change of teaching mode;more importantly,it refers to the enhancement of teachers' teaching reform consciousness,the deep understanding of teaching idea and the exploration of teaching practice.However,the characteristics of rural middle school teachers are more prominent: their long-term work in rural areas,heavy teaching burden,and inadequate opportunities to upgrade their profession.This kind of situation can not meet the requirements of the new middle school English teachers in the new period,nor can it meet the needs of the society and parents,and the task of studying the professional development of English teachers in rural middle schools is imminent.At the same time,we should also see that the domestic research on professional development of English teachers is more inclined to theoretical research,and the related empirical research is still rare.The research is based on the theories of the professional development of teachers and the theories of pedagogy,choosing English teachers,middle school students and administrative officials from 15 rural middle schools in Hanzhong City as the objects of the research,using the questionnaire survey method,the literature research method and the case study method.This paper aims to clarify the basic situation,find out the professional development needs,analyze its crux and explore the coping strategies in order to draw people's attention to English teachers' professionalism in rural middle schools,and provide suggestions for upgrading the professional development of English teachers in rural middle schools.
