Du Bois is a great writer and thinker,as well as distinguished social activist and scholar.Although having multiple roles,we could never ignore his identity as educator.Du Bois had been exploring the strategies to solve Negro problem for his whole life.In his view,education could play an important role in solving Negro problem and realizing racial advancement.This paper involves several aspects of Du Bois' philosophy of black education,namely,the purposes,the contents and the models of black education.Du Bois believed that the essence and fundamental purpose of education was not to teach living skills but to cultivate men of all-round development.Black education should cultivate the Talented Tenth to finally realize the advancement of the Negro race.With the change of his ideas on the purposes of education,Du Bois revised the Talented Tenth to Guiding Hundredth.Liberal arts education,proposed at the time of vocational education dominating all levels of black education,was conducive to the long term development of the race.Pan-African education aligned the African Americans with the Negros around the World to fight against racism and colonial oppression.The recognition to American society and culture helped American black get rid of the double consciousness dilemma.About the models or methods of black education,Du Bois considered that separate schooling was more suitable for blacks,and black community was important in black education.Du Bois' philosophy of black education was of great importance to the black education.His articulation about the purposes of education and liberal arts education was a great breakthrough,making black education more reasonable and comprehensive.Meanwhile,Du Bois' philosophy of black education provided a way to carry out education in the context of globalization.
