With the further development of Chinese education and teaching reform, quality education is increasingly valued. The basic idea of quality education is to focus on the students’ sustainable development, and education development should be oriented to modernization, the world and the future.Classroom teaching is the major premise of quality education. That is to say,if we want to fully implement the quality education,we must pay special attention to classroom teaching. The emergence and utilization of open teaching mode is an important way to realize quality education, which can really change the way students learn, and make them get fully developed in their asking, thinking and solving problems, etc. In recent years, the researches of the open English teaching mode have been one of the hot research topics both abroad and at home. However, there are relatively fewer researches about the open English teaching in rural primary schools. Therefore, this thesis discusses the application of the open teaching mode of English in rural primary school. The author took 66 students from two classes in Hongyun Hope Primary School in Xingcheng as the research participants to conduct the experiment for fifteen weeks.Class 1 was the experimental class in which the open English teaching mode was applied, while Class 2was the control class with traditional English teaching mode. The author tried to explore three questions through questionnaires, tests and interview:(1)Will open teaching mode improve students’ interest in English learning in the rural primary school?(2)Will open teaching mode reduce students’ anxiety towards English?(3)Will open teaching mode improve the students’ grades? The results of questionnaire and test show that the students in the experimental class are more interested in English learning than before and most of them feel less nervous while learning English than the students in control class. The analysis of pre-test and post-test in EC and CC reveals that the grades of students in the experimental class have improved a lot while the grades of CC do not have much change.Furthermore, according to the interview, most of the students show an active attitude towards the open teaching mode and agree that it is more effective to learn English in various new ways than the traditional way.The findings of the study imply that the open teaching mode can be applied to English teaching in rural primary school.
