An Investigation On Senior High English Teacher Burnout And Its Countermeasures

As a key factor that affects teachers' professional development and education quality improvement,teacher burnout has been regarded as a focus among the psychologists and foreign language education workers for many years.Since the1970 s,clinical psychologist Freudenberger first put forward the concept of job burnout,it means individual people face overloaded work and causes physical and emotional exhaustion.Teacher burnout not only harms their physical and mental health,but has a negative influence on the relationship between teachers and students and their colleagues,and even threatens the harmony between the family members.This study is based on the Rogers humanism theory;Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory as the theoretical basis,according to the theory,the author puts forward the research questions as follows:(1)What is the current situation of senior high school English teacher burnout?(2)What causes the English teacher burnout?(3)What measures can be taken to relieve the senior high school English teacher burnout?Under these circumstances,the author empirically investigated and analyzed the status quo of the burnout of senior high school English teachers on the foundation of relevant researches at home and abroad.Through distributing the questionnaire,the basic information of ninety-two senior high school English teachers was collected.Twenty of these teachers were selected to participate in the interview.According to the analysis of collected data,the author concludes the following main findings:(1)the overall burnout level of senior high school English teachers is low.Specifically speaking,teacher burnout level in the dimension of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization is high,but their burnout level in the dimension of reduced personal accomplishment is low.(2)The main reasons affect the senior high school English teacher burnout including overloaded work and complicated relationship between the students and colleagues,as well as the relationship between the students' performance of the examination and teachers' ability level.After getting the research results,the author has proposed some solutions and methods to protect the teachers from suffering burnout:(1)Schools should release the workload of the teachers,so that teachers can get the physical and mental relaxation.(2)Teachers should handle the harmonious relationship between the students,colleagues and leaders,to ensure the relaxed and happy working atmosphere.(3)Society,schools should have reasonable expectation on teachers,and teachersthemselves should improve their teaching level and overcome their own shortcomings.The author hopes sincerely these findings and methods can be the impetus to the further development of teachers' career.
