The Research Of Illustration In New YCT Test

With the Chinese boom coming again in the international community,the new YCT comes into being as a Chinese proficiency test,which is fit for students of elementary school and junior high school in abroad.This test is designed according to international standards,and it causes great concern among overseas Chinese learners.This thesis will do in-depth research of the illustrations which hasn't attracted academic attention in the new YCT test.Through comprehensive surveys of the new YCT test,as well as quantitative analysis of 20 sets of papers provided by Office of Chinese Language Council International (known colloquially as "Hanban"),we find that illustration has become an important content of new YCT test.The illustrations occupy an important position in the examination, because it has a variety of functions, directly accountable to the examines for language environment and verbal communication;and the illustrations can also express the subjects of this test and so on.In sum,the way of using illustrations is a best way to present the new YCT test.According to the relevant theoretical of illustrations, this text introduces the basic situation of classification of illustrations, characteristics and functions. Through the analysis of the selection and distribution of illustrations in the new YCT exam papers ,we found that the illustration in papers of new YCT test shows two main features: 1) the number of illustration and difficulties of the examination have showed an inverse proportion;2) the contents and types decide the application of illustrations. In addition to these features,we compared the illustrations in the new YCT test and the HSK test,and we knew the following conclusion:the number of illustrations of the YCT test is far greater than the new HSK test.Because the new HSK test is much more difficult than the new YCT test,and they are set up for different candidates and purpose.When compared with other foreign language test——PTE YL (Pearson test of English for Young Learners,it ever called London Test of English for Children),we can see that the illustrations in the new YCT test are all come from real photos,but the illustrations in the PTE YL are all cartoons.As we know from the article,the number of illustrations is large and illustrations are drawn from our real life.We can also know the illustrations involve many contents and so on.We summarized the functions of illustrations in the new YCT test which are as follows: relieve candidates' stress;reflect the language function;assist or replace text;reproduce the communicative situation.In addition, this paper classified the language abilities which are required by the test syllabus,especially the vocabulary and grammar.This article use the method of experiment to analyze the illustrations of new YCT test.We asked 427 primary and secondary students from Thailand to finish the first level of the new YCT test.We analyzed the accuracy rate through their test results and explained the reasons of some problems which the accuracy rate are low.In addition, this research also use the SPSS analysis software to summarize the test results.We investigate the reliability of the test,and the result shows that the problems with illustrations are good.Our research also analyzed the expression of illustrations for the test syllabus.And we still found that the selection of illustrations still has some problems.To solve this,we come up with some measures and advice to the design of illustrations.And we summed up the basic principles of the design of illustration in new YCT test.The article also puts forward some corresponding teaching strategies for the teaching of the new YCT test, and puts forward some suggestions for the students to participate in the new YCT test.
