Currently,Chinese is the fastest growing second language in the United States,and there is an increasingly number of people who want to learn Chinese language and culture,but the Chinese teaching resources in the central region are relatively scarce.As one of the earliest established Confucius Institute in America,Confucius Institute at University of Kansas uses the means of distance learning to provide Chinese learning approaches and resources for Kansas,Missouri and Great Kansas City areas,and has achieved fruitful teaching results.Distance teaching has brought many conveniences on time,space and resource equality,but also there are some limitations.Classroom management is the premise and guarantee of learning and it makes learning more efficient.Therefore,classroom management plays a significant role of ensuring students to mater knowledge they have learned when the learning resources,teaching environment and invested time from students are limited.This paper summarizes the author's own teaching experience and the classroom management strategies at the Confucius Institute at University of Kansas in the distance teaching mode to provide referential classroom management methods,hoping to promote the development for distance teaching of Chinese as a foreign language,thus promoting the international Chinese teaching progress.The study includes the aspects that are helpful to classroom management and about the teaching process.This paper mainly consists of six chapters.The first chapter is an overall introduction about the purpose and significance of this study and a review of relevant literature is also included.Also,the author found that the previous studies are focus on either classroom management or distance learning and few study focus on classroom management in the distance learning mode.The second chapter introduces the scope and significance of classroom management,summarizes the characteristics of Chinese distance learning and studies the interaction between classroom management and distance learning.The third chapter introduces the teaching situation of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kansas.Including the roles of CIKU and the teacher.The fourth chapter is about the management of routine objects in the classroom in distance teaching.Managing the environment,the classroom rules and the works are included.In addition to these,the author provided some specific methods.The fifth chapter introduces the management of the teaching process which includes time management and in-class activity management with examples.The last chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the whole thesis and points out the inadequacies about the study.
